California dairy industry struggles as bird flu cases multiply

California health officials have identified 16 human cases of bird flu this month as the virus spreads through dairy farms, raising concerns about worker safety and testing protocols. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the cases represent most of the country’s cattle-to-human transmissions of H5N1. The California Department of Public Health reports testing only 39 people for H5N1, the strain affecting cattle herds across the state. Workers who tested positive have experienced mild symptoms, including flu-like conditions and pink eye, with no hospitalizations reported. State authorities have confirmed bird flu infections at 178 California dairies since the

L.A. breaks rainfall record with 2.8 inches; NWS investigates possible tornado

Southern California was battered by an atmospheric river storm Thursday, bringing record-breaking rain, mudslides and, potentially, a tornado.  Oxnard experienced strong winds, which tore the roofs off of homes at a mobile home park in the College Park neighborhood around 3:30 p.m.  The National Weather Service is investigating the possibility that the damage was caused by a tornado, though straight-line winds were also capable of similar destruction. Crews are expected to inspect the site Friday morning. Tornadoes are rare in California, though they do occur. Election Results: California voters reject measure to expand rent control

Voters have rejected Proposition 33 – a measure to expand local rent control – in California Tuesday night. This proposition would have given local governments more authority to enact rent control by repealing the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, a state law that limits it. This measure would have given cities more freedom and power to limit how much landlords can raise rent. Prop. 33 would have caused a reduction in local property tax revenues of at least tens of millions of dollars annually. This is due to a likely expansion of rent control in some communities. Undocumented students file lawsuit against UC over campus job ban

LOS ANGELES — A legal advocacy group representing undocumented students filed a lawsuit against the University of California, challenging the system’s policy that prevents students without legal immigration status from holding campus jobs. The lawsuit alleges the University of California, a public system, discriminates against undocumented students by denying them employment opportunities available to other enrolled students, violating the state’s Fair Employment and Housing Act. The legal action follows UC President Michael Drake’s January decision to block the implementation of a policy approved by the UC Board of Regents in April 2023 that would have allowed undocumented students to work

UCLA team breaks chemistry rules to create new path for drug development

University of California, Los Angeles scientists have turned organic chemistry on its head by disproving a rule that’s been around for 100 years. Neil Garg and his team at UCLA showed that some supposedly impossible molecules can actually be made, publishing their work in science. Garg is the Kenneth N. Trueblood Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA.  Bredt’s rule, established in 1924, has long dictated that certain double bonds cannot exist at specific positions on organic molecules due to geometric constraints. This rule has limited chemists’ ability to design and synthesize certain compounds, particularly in drug discovery efforts.

Air quality specialists and public health officials say the Air Quality Index, or AQI, fails to measure specific toxic particles released by burning structures, even when air appears clear to residents. “The AQI is not reliable for this situation,” said Anthony Wexler, director of the Air Quality Research Center at the University of California-Davis. “And you can’t see it. Marijuana black market outpaces state law enforcement efforts

California law enforcement agencies have seized $544 million worth of illegal marijuana this year, but local sheriffs say these operations barely impact state’s flourishing black market marijuana trade. Two major state programs recently announced their combined seizures, with the California Department of Justice program collecting $353 million worth of illicit plants and a governor’s office task force seizing an additional $191 million. Local law enforcement officials, however, report these numbers represent only a small fraction of the illegal cannabis market. Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue said his county alone produces an estimated 12 million to 16 million illicit plants annually.

Hidden hope for pandemic learning loss emerges from California classrooms

A new study offers hope that schools can make meaningful progress in addressing pandemic learning loss, especially in foundational skills like reading. The research examined a California program that invested around $1,000 per student annually to train teachers in the science of reading – the study found positive impacts on third graders’ test scores in 70 high-poverty schools. While the full implications remain unclear, the approach of collaborating with educators instead of dictating reforms may be a key insight for policymakers. The study compared the 70 California schools participating in the Early Literacy Support Block Grant program to a set

LA mosquitoes are lighting up - but why?

Los Angeles residents, if you think you have been seeing glowing mosquitoes you’re not going crazy! A new strategy is being introduced to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which has proven resistant to insecticides and quite aggressive. These mosquitoes are notorious for their painful bites, often called ‘ankle biters.’ Steve Vetrone, the Vector Control District’s Scientific-Technical Services Director, told Secret Los Angeles, that “from mid-May to October’s end, we’ll be releasing sterile male mosquitoes in Sunland-Tujunga; we’ll start with 32,000 per week, gradually ramping up to around 60,000 weekly.” Over the project’s duration, the program could unleash approximately one million

What This Homebuyer Discovered After His Sheriff's Auction Purchase

A $5,000 bargain turned into a legal nightmare for a Butler County man who discovered his sheriff’s auction purchase included not just a vacant lot but an entire residential street in Trenton, Ohio. Jason Fauntleroy planned to build a home when he bought what he thought was an empty lot at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office auction in 2021. The purchase, however, came with an unexpected addition – ownership of the private drive providing sole access to several existing homes. According to Yahoo, Fauntleroy said of his attempts to resolve the situation with city officials “they shut me out.” .

California Expands Gun Control Laws with Four New Bills for 2025

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed multiple bills in September 2024 aimed at strengthening gun control measures and preventing mass shootings, including new restrictions on firearm purchases and expanded safety requirements for gun owners. The legislation, which takes effect in 2025, introduces changes to private party transactions, mandates enhanced safety education, and broadens the scope of gun violence restraining orders. These measures build upon California’s existing gun safety framework, which has contributed to a gun death rate 43% lower than the national average, according to the governor’s office. “The laws build on California’s successful strategies to address gun violence, including new
